Preschool Sports Carnival at Erina Kindergarten: Learning Through Movement and Play

At Erina Kindergarten, preparing children for school involves much more than learning letters and numbers. It also means helping them build confidence, develop social skills, try new experiences and learn how to participate as part of a group.

As part of our School Readiness Preschool Program, our Preschool children recently took part in an exciting Sports Carnival filled with movement, teamwork and plenty of smiles.

The event gave children the opportunity to explore different sporting activities, challenge themselves and enjoy a memorable day with their friends.

A Day of Fun and Sporting Activities

Our Sports Carnival featured a variety of activities designed to encourage children to get moving and give something new a try.

The children participated in:

  • Running races – practising speed, coordination and following instructions.

  • Relay races – learning to take turns and participate as part of a team.

  • Long jump – exploring movement, balance and coordination.

  • Shot put – experimenting with throwing movements and developing body control.

Each child had the opportunity to have a go at the different events in a supportive and enjoyable environment. The focus was on participation, exploration and having fun together.

For young children, these experiences can help build familiarity with group activities and encourage them to approach new challenges with growing confidence.

Supporting Our School Readiness Program

Starting big school is an important milestone for children and their families. At Erina Kindergarten, our School Readiness Program offers opportunities for children to practise a range of skills that can support their transition to primary school.

A Sports Carnival is one way to bring these skills into an engaging, hands-on experience.

During the events, children practised listening to instructions, waiting for their turn, moving between activities and participating alongside their peers. These everyday skills are valuable as children become more familiar with group routines and expectations.

The carnival also encouraged children to try unfamiliar activities, make choices and discover what they can do. Having opportunities to practise these skills in a relaxed setting can help children feel more comfortable when approaching new experiences.

School readiness is a journey, and each opportunity to explore, learn and participate contributes to children's ongoing development.

Learning That Winning Isn't Everything

One of the most meaningful lessons from the Sports Carnival was that sometimes we win, and sometimes we don't — and that's okay.

For young children, sporting activities offer opportunities to begin understanding how to respond to different outcomes. They can practise celebrating others, managing disappointment, trying again and recognising the value of participating.

At Erina Kindergarten, we want children to understand that success isn't only about coming first. Giving something a go, encouraging a friend and enjoying the experience are just as important.

By focusing on effort and participation, educators can help children develop resilience and a positive attitude towards learning new things.

Building Friendships Through Active Play

The Sports Carnival also gave children an opportunity to share experiences and connect with their friends.

Taking part in races and activities together encouraged them to cheer one another on, take turns and enjoy being part of a group. These shared moments can help children develop a sense of belonging and strengthen their relationships with peers.

Physical activities also allow children to practise fundamental movement skills while discovering the enjoyment of being active.

Whether running towards the finish line, attempting a long jump or waiting excitedly for the next event, every child had an opportunity to participate in their own way.

Celebrating Every Child's Effort

We are proud of all our Preschool children for taking part in the Sports Carnival and embracing the spirit of the day.

A big thank you to our educators for organising the activities and creating an encouraging environment where children could explore, participate and enjoy themselves.

At Erina Kindergarten, we believe meaningful learning happens in many different ways. Through our School Readiness Preschool Program, we aim to support children's development across social, emotional, physical and early learning skills as they prepare for their next chapter.
